Slap bang right in the middle of the North Island, Taupo lies at the north-eastern end of Lake Taupo, the biggest lake in Australasia and formed by a volcanic explosion in AD 186.
On a clear day the distant volcanic peaks of Mount Tongariro and Ngauruhoe and the snow capped Ruapehu in the Tongariro National Park provide a spectacular backdrop to the lake.
The lake discharges into the mighty Waikato River and the river flows over one of NZ’s most spectacular waterfalls, Huka Falls, which is just a short distance out of town and definitely worth a look. It is NZ’s most visited natural attraction and222000 litres of water pour over it per second!! Hukafalls Jet boat in Taupo is the only jet boat company permitted to take you to the base of the mighty Huka Falls. It is certainly a fun family activity in Taupo.
Taupo is a centre of geothermal activity and hot springs suitable for bathing abound. DeBretts is an awesome spot for kids and parents!
Lake Taupo offers many more activities; kayaking, canoeing, wind surfing, scenic flights or sailing and for the adrenaline junkies to get their fix, there is sky diving, bungy jumping, jet boating, water skiing and wake boarding.
Just a few minutes from Taupo township, Taupo’s Bungy and Taupo Cliff Hanger is set in one of New Zealand’s most scenic bungy locations, with its unique cantiler jump platform 47 metres above dramatic stunning cliff faces and the crystal clear water of the Waikato River below. They have a range of jumps with some kids ones as well.
